WHO AM I? (About me)
Hello, I am Allison Prince and I am a person who stutters. I cannot remember exactly when it started, but noticed I have been stuttering around my early adult years(early 20s) and it still continues to the present time. That makes it approximately over 20 years I have been dealing with, and coping with my stutter. Sometimes the stuttering has been like a 'bane' of my existence. There were times when the words just won't come out my mouth at all! Most times when I stutter in the presence of other people, I feel bad, and look down on myself. However, lately I've consciously decided to not be harsh on myself. I chose to show compassion and be patient with myself. On this note I recognize that there are a lot of negative emotions attached to my stuttering. Just stuttering a little bit, could stir up a series of unhealthy feeling. Maybe these emotions are only serving to protect me, but I get 'trapped' in these uncomfortable feelings, and they do not help to make the stuttering go away. These emotions may include, anxiety, stress, embarrassment, and self doubt. I stutter occasionally, and though I do not consider myself a seriously severe stutterer, there were moments in my life where my stuttering has been severe.
The negative emotions has another effect than just making me feel bad. They act like mental blocks that prevent me from moving forward, like being afraid to speak, not wanting to say somethings, and overall closing myself off from communicating with others. I decided to look at what's out there that help to treat this problem. Seeing that there are people who had stuttered really bad in the past, and now no longer stutter, I realize that there is hope. I don't have to live with this issue all my life I thought. And yes it can go away! I learned that the popular TV show host, Steve Harvey from the United States for a period of his life, had stuttered severely. Now there's no trace that he even stuttered in the first place. In one of his talk shows, Steve Harvey was speaking to a couple of guests who stuttered and told them that it's only anxiety. My understanding of this, is that he was pointing out anxiety as an emotion that may prevent a person who stutters, from expressing themselves freely. So then, what if I remove or reduce the anxiety? Would it help me to speak better? Or better yet, what if I release all the unhealthyemotions that I feel?
I previously came across and used EFT which had helped in healing me both physical and mentally. So I thought of using the EFT around stuttering and the emotions I wanted to release. I found online that people were already using EFT Tapping in releasing stuttering! For myself, I decided to write down my own EFT meditations, using specific words, and targeting each experience I've had around stuttering, I also went further and singled out each emotion, and meditated on a single bad event. I learned that EFT meditations could help to rid one of unwanted emotions, and the more tapping someone does, the closer they might to get to the root of the (stuttering) issue.
EFT Tapping has helped me to be more focused, calm and centered. I feel more safe, more comfortable, and less scared to speak when I want to, or need to. There is also the benefit of stuttering less than before, and gradually reducing the occurrence of stuttering. I am pleased with the results so far and my overall goal is that it stops completely.
I am sharing these EFT Tapping meditations with other persons who stutter who may be interested in trying this technique themselves. I hope that others find these meditations and exercises useful in helping them manage with the difficulty of stuttering. Here's to finding your voice!
Allison
What is Emotional Freedom Technique?
Emotional
freedom techniques (EFT) has been used as an alternative treatment for many
mental or emotional issues and even for physical pain. It is commonly
known as Tapping, or EFT Tapping, and may sometimes be referred to as
psychological acupressure.
EFT
Tapping was developed by Gary Craig in the 1990s.It requires that a person
focus on a certain issue while tapping specific energy points also known as
meridians, on the upper body. The meridians are the pressure points used
in the traditional Chinese medicine of acupuncture and acupressure.
During EFT, these energy points are stimulated by tapping on them using the
fingers and sometimes with the palm of the hand. As the person taps, they
recite specific phrases that deal with addressing the mental, emotional or
physical distress.
The
use of EFT has shown to be both beneficial and very effective. Some of the issues it's used for
include, anxiety, depression,
post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), phobias, and physical pain. It's also found to significantly
improve clients' mental well-being.
How does EFT help people who stutter?
(Why use EFT for stuttering?)
Guided meditations using Emotional Freedom Techniques or EFT Tapping could help people who stutter release negative mental blocks, and allow positive affirmations for self-love, self-acceptance, and to consequently reduce/remove stutter.
A lot of people who stutter might have mental blocks, suppressed emotions or negative beliefs in their subconscious minds, and these could unknowingly be what are triggering the physical response that produces the stuttering or speech blocks.
For some of you, you may stutter almost all the time, regardless of who you speak to or where you are. And for some of us, we may only stutter/stammer in certain situations, like when talking to a group of people, or talking on the phone for example. Then for others, it just shows up randomly or unexpectedly. Regardless of the conditions or circumstances, we find ourselves in, if there’s an underlying mental/emotional issue that may somehow be alerted or threatened when we have to speak, then when we do stutter, the act of stuttering in itself is only the end result of that mental/emotional response. Or in other words, the underlying issue is showing up in our lives by physically inhibiting our ability to express ourselves fully, using our voice.
We may not always realize what those issues are, but using EFT Tapping effectively, helps to clear out those negative thoughts. In some cases, EFT Tapping could uproot or bring to the surface the main source of one’s stuttering/stammering. With those mental blocks out of the way or eliminated entirely, the path to positivity, healing, and flowing speech become your possibility!
Does EFT stop stuttering?
There is no known official study or research showing that EFT Tapping can stop stuttering. However, research have found EFT Tapping to be very effective in eliminating or reducing fears, anxiety and other similar emotions. These emotions are experienced by a lot of people who stutter and might intensify the issue. By removing or reducing the negative thoughts that are impacting the stuttering, I am of the opinion that the stuttering itself may be alleviated.
